The Haydon Health Walk was started by Grahame Lee almost 8 years ago with just 1 walker on the first walk and since that time they have grown to over 250 registered members and regularly attract over 100 walkers each week, with a record of 126 set in November 2017.
When the local authority withdrew funding from the WfH scheme in October 2017 Grahame and a team of 40 volunteers decided the scheme could not be allowed to stop so they set up Step Out Swindon with the help and support of the Ramblers Walking for Health team. Since then the Scheme has gone on from strength to strength with more walks and doubled the number of registered walkers in the Scheme to over 550. The Scheme organise social events and also leads monthly bridging walks of 4 miles which has led to many health walkers progressing on to joining the Ramblers and their shorter walks programme. Some of those have become walk leaders for the Ramblers and local Group Committee members showing how working together can bring great results.
Step Out Swindon were recently presented with the Pride of Swindon 2019 Team Award for their voluntary work within the community from the Mayor and Lord Lieutenant.
